Pfizer, the US pharma company that makes the world’s first heartburn pill, is looking into a potential heartburn drug called Zantac.
The drug, which is the active ingredient in Nexium, was first approved by the FDA in 1999, and Pfizer is now seeking approval to sell the drug in the US.
Pfizer’s chief executive officer, William F. Du Bois Jr, told Bloomberg News in an interview that the US Food and Drug Administration is awaiting an FDA advisory committee decision. Pfizer’s drug is currently under review by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration.
The FDA advisory committee, which was created by then-US Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-MA, and her colleagues in Congress, had recommended that Pfizer use “a new and more widely used drug for the treatment of heartburn to help doctors better understand its potential side effects,” Du Bois said.
The drug was first approved by the FDA in 1999 as a heartburn medication, known as Nexium. It was available in the US as Zantac and was first approved in 2002 as an over-the-counter pain reliever. Pfizer, which has a manufacturing plant in the UK, said it was in discussions with regulators to develop a drug that would be similar to Zantac.
Pfizer is the world’s biggest pharmaceutical company, with annual sales of more than $1.2 billion. Its products are sold over the counter, including Nexium, in prescription and over-the-counter versions, according to IMS Health. The company is also engaged in developing other treatments, including Nexium and Prilosec and Prevacid.
Pfizer is also developing a drug to treat acid reflux, Nexium, which is sold as Nexium-based Zantac. The drug is being sold by Pfizer for $10 a tablet, according to IMS Health.
The drug is being manufactured in India and China, and is expected to start commercial distribution in the US in the next few years.
Pfizer is looking into developing a heartburn drug to improve the quality of life for people with heartburn.
